Jimmy Trayhorn born on the 23/1/1925 son of Charles and Bertha Trayhorn of 388 Baker Street, Enfield, Middx.
Jimmy went to school in Enfield and joined the Air Training Corps where he became a bugler in the band.
As soon as he was able Jimmy joined the RAF and on the 24/2/42 was classed as A1 fit and told to await enlistment papers which duly arrived on the 29/1/43. He reported to the Air Crew Selection Board at Oxford and was recruited as Air Gunner. He was placed on the standard 6 months Reserve Service at Home. On the 26/7/43 Jimmy reported to 14 Initial Training Wing until the 7/8/43. Following basic training he went to 1 Elementary Air Gunnery School until the 23/11/43. Leaving as Sergeant Air Gunner RAF he transferred to Lancaster Flight Training School until 15/3/44 when he was posted with his crew to 1 Group 550 Squadron North Killingholme, Lincolnshire. Initially the crew consisted of P/Officer SC Beeson Pilot, Sgt. KJR Hewlett Flight Engineer, F/Sgt. ER McQuarrie Navigator, Sgt. D Neal A/Bomber, Sgt. JK Norgate WO.Air Gunner, Sgt. HS Picton Mid Upper Gunner, Sgt. JA Trayhorn Rear Gunner. Later Squadron Leader K MacAleavy replaced McQuarrie as Navigator.
31 sorties later Jimmy was reported as missing in action on the 28/8/44 later confirmed as killed in action whilst bombing enemy V1 launch sites at Wemers Capel Northern France. This was the last 'Crossbow' raid by the RAF against V1 launch sites. The 3 gunners were killed whilst the rest of the crew spent the war as POW's.

The family met up in Worcester on Boxing Day morning 2008. The photo shows a mix of Harrolds and Trayhorns.
The Trayhorn Crest was on show, something that would have impressed Charlie who had carved the crest from polystyrene using a soldering iron back in 1978. Old photo shows Charlie using a soldering iron on Gibralter during his time in the REME circa 1944.

On May 6th 2008 John Trayhorn, the second son of Charlie and Joan Trayhorn died suddenly at his home in Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria. He is survived by his wife Denise. John was just 53 when he suffered a sudden heart attack.
John was born on August 15th 1954 in Enfield, Middlesex. He attended Lavender Road Junior School and Chace Boys School. On leaving school John went to the Barbara Speake Stage School, Acton, London where he met fellow students Jack Wild and Phil Collins. A career followed and throughout the end of the 1960's and early 70's John appeared in some of the most controversial film and plays. He was in Ken Russell's very sexy and blasphemous 'The Devils' starring Oliver Reed, Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange' and 'Child's Play' with Lawrence Harvey and Rupert Davies.
He understudied Jack Wild in Lionel Bart's hit film musical 'Oliver'. He made a number of TV appearances including 'Z Cars', The Benny Hill Show', 'Doomwatch' and 'The Wednesday Play'.
His only starring role was in the Children's Film Foundation Film 'Hoverbug'.
In 1972 John decided that acting was not for him so he worked for Metro Sound, Waltham Cross as a Hi Fi Technician. He left for a post as Manager for 'David Way Furnishers', Winchmore Hill, London N21.
John married in 1981. In 1990 he and Denise left Enfield for the Lake District, an area they both knew well having had many a walking holiday there. John worked as manager for 'Edge of the World' outdoor supplies, Bowness on Windemere until his death.
John was a larger than life character, short of stature but big on personality he loved his family, his wife Denise and the view from his front room of Morcambe Bay, but most of all John loved life.
His funeral was held in Lancaster Crematorium on Thursday May 22nd. Attended by friends, family and colleagues the Humanist 'Celebration of Johns Life' was led by Ian Abbott, with music by the Bonzo Dog Dooda Band and Billie Holiday.
Now John was a born entertainer
And right from the start this was seen
At the Barbara Speake Stage School at Acton
For the future of stage and screen.
With the likes of Jack Wild and Phil Collins
He learnt the craft of the stage
Then Lionel Bart's 'Oliver' hit the West End
And musicals made the front page.
It made it for young master Trayhorn
This keen theatrical lodger
If Jack Wild had gone sick, then John would step in
and we would have a new 'Artful Dodger'.
Then two old dears of the B.B.C.
Arthur Howard and Cardew the Cad
Made a film about hovercraft just for the kids
And John was there as the 'Head Lad'.
'Child's Play' was Johns next performance,
With Lawrence Harvey who made women swoon
And Rupert Davies who was famous as 'Maigret'
In a black post war Citroen Saloon.
Then the Tick Tock Tick of 'A Clockwork Orange'
Stanley Kubrick on teenage youth
Where John was thrown through a window
In the Directors search for the truth.
Now was the time for the 'Z Cars'
When Z Victor One hit the screen
And John played his part to perfection
He fell off a ladder to finish a scene.
Then the serious stuff with Ken Russell
The 'Devils' with Oliver Reed
And demur Vanessa Redgrave as a hunchbacked nun
Giving piety whenever the need.
Then the world of commerce beckoned,
Though John was an actor still,
He managed 'David Way Furnishers'
Down there in Winchmore Hill.
But the call of the wild beat faster
For a place he knew so well
To where he walked for many a mile
Across the Cumbrian Fell.
'Edge of the World' Lakeland Products
Knew talent at a glance
And grabbed John in as manager
While they had the chance.
John was a man who was larger than life
Sort of chap you could never forget
He walked, he climbed, canoed played guitar and drums,
He did them all well and yet?
His other side shone through as well
Antiques became a passion
And model railways in the loft,
They'll always be in fashion.
Nostalgia for his favorite films
When Ealing Studios held sway
And England looked so different
In an austere sort of way.
But in our memories, we've all got John
And these memories will never go cold
For when they made John Trayhorn
They threw away the mould!

Joan Harrold was married to Charlie Trayhorn in 1948. She was born in Enfield, Middlesex and lived with her sister Grace, brother Peter and mother Beatrice, her father having been knocked off his bicycle by a bus and killed in Enfield Highway in September 1939, he served throughout the Great War with the Machine Gun Corps. Joan spent long periods living with with her elder brother Philip and his wife Hilda. Phil joined the Somerset Light Infantry in 1940 by the time he was killed by enemy action in Normandy July 1944 he had produced two daughters, Kathleen and Betty. The photo shows Phil holding his daughter Kathleen with Joan by his side, Grace in front with Peter, taken at Kenilworth Crescent 1942. The other photo shows Joan in Girl Guide uniform the same year. The Harrold family owned a penny lending library shop until the death of the father, hard times followed with Beatrice having to work as a cleaner in St. Michaels Hospital, Enfield. The death of brother Phil led to Joan help bring up Hilda's daughters and start work for the GPO as telephonist. Joan new the Trayhorn family who lived nearby in Baker Street. Joan befriended Charlie's sister Margret. Charlie fell for Joan asking her for her hand in marriage whilst on leave.

Charlie joined the Herts and Bucks Regiment in 1940 then transferred to the ROAC. In 1942 he joined the newly formed REME. Posted to Gibraltar he was to spend the rest of the war on the island occasionally visiting the Spanish mainland. See photos. At the end of hostilities Charlie was de-mobbed but within 2 weeks had re-enlisted into the REME and sent to Germany at part of the BAOR. Returning to Salisbury Plain Charlie married and a year later (1950) went to Jamaica with his new wife Joan and their 6 month old son Philip.

Welcome to the first post of the TRAYHORN Blog. The official blog of the South Western Trayhorn family. First thoughts are about the family history so lets get some facts down. The photo shows brothers Charlie and Jimmy Trayhorn at Water End Cottage around 1930. The next photo shows the family during WW2 minus Charlie who was in the army. You can see mum, dad, brother Tom, sisters Betty, Margaret, Eddie with her husband Norman and baby son Peter, inset is a later photo of Jimmy in RAF uniform taken a year later in 1944, his last.
