Charlie joined the Herts and Bucks Regiment in 1940 then transferred to the ROAC. In 1942 he joined the newly formed REME. Posted to Gibraltar he was to spend the rest of the war on the island occasionally visiting the Spanish mainland. See photos. At the end of hostilities Charlie was de-mobbed but within 2 weeks had re-enlisted into the REME and sent to Germany at part of the BAOR. Returning to Salisbury Plain Charlie married and a year later (1950) went to Jamaica with his new wife Joan and their 6 month old son Philip.
